This archaeological site is reached from the highway corridor E-75, thus making it a very approachable tourist destination in Macedonia. The nocturnal illumination of the city walls and preserved monuments, additionally emphasize its beauty and attractiveness.
The old city of Stobi was the largest city in the the area, later capital city of the Roman province Macedonia Secunda, an important urban, military, administrative, trade and religious center of two large empires: Roman and Early Byzantine.
Stobi was built in the Hellenic period, some time before the rule of the Macedonian king Philip the Fifth. Ancient Stobi had architectural structure and organization of life, which speaks of a highly developed urban society with a high level of cultural development. The “denar” coins were produced here in the Roman period. North Macedonian currency is named after it now. Numerous palaces and temples as well as an ancient theatre were found, followed with stunning early christian churches and a synagogue too.
