AVGONYMA

The Avgonima is a medieval village located in central Chios 16 kilometers from the city of Hui. The houses are built of stone and with small windows. The whole village is located on a rocky hill.
The village, like the neighboring Anavatos, is the oldest, pre-medieval castle village, and according to a local legend it was created by the workers who built the majestic Nea Moni in the 11th century AD. and then remained in Chios. The houses are built of stone and with small windows, to be protected from pirate raids during the Middle Ages. Traditionally, the village was once destroyed by pirates, just like Anavatos.
